Citation Policy

Accurate and fair citation gives proper credit to the work of others and allows readers to verify and build on published research. AJCCE applies the following principles.

For authors

  • Cite every source whose ideas, data, text, figures, methods, software or datasets are used in the manuscript.
  • Cite the original source wherever possible, rather than a secondary work that refers to it.
  • Cite only works you have read and that are directly relevant to your manuscript.
  • Limit self-citation to work that is relevant and necessary.
  • Do not cite retracted work unless the retraction itself is being discussed, and make clear that the work has been retracted.
  • Make sure every in-text citation appears in the reference list and vice versa, and that all bibliographic details are correct.

For editors and reviewers

  • Do not ask authors to cite the journal, your own work or the work of colleagues unless there is a clear academic reason.
  • Any references you suggest should be relevant and should improve the manuscript.

Citation manipulation

Excessive self-citation, citation arrangements between authors or journals, and coercive citation requests are forms of misconduct and are handled according to the journal's Publication Ethics.
